Hip Replacement Recovery: Sleeping Positions, Swelling, and Comfort Tips That Actually Help

Sleep after a hip replacement can be… annoying. You’re tired, but you can’t get comfortable, and swelling seems to have a mind of its own. Here are a few practical tips that tend to help most people.

Sleeping positions (simple options)

  • On your back with a pillow under the knees (if comfortable)

  • On your non-operated side with a pillow between the knees

  • Avoid twisting — keep the hips stacked

Swelling: why it hangs around

Swelling is normal and it can last for weeks. It often increases after activity — that doesn’t mean you’ve damaged anything, it just means your body is still healing.

Comfort routine that works well

  • Short walk

  • Gentle exercises

  • Elevate + ice

  • Repeat later rather than doing everything in one go
