Home Visit Physiotherapy in South East London: A Personalised Plan (Without Clinic Hassle)
Updated: Sep 5
If pain, surgery, reduced mobility or a neurological condition makes travelling to a clinic difficult, home visit physiotherapy can bring assessment and rehabilitation to you. Mobile physiotherapy is not simply a clinic appointment moved into a living room. Your own environment can provide useful information about how you walk, manage stairs, get out of a chair and carry out the everyday tasks that matter to you.
Tom Morgan Physio Solutions provides home physiotherapy across Kidbrooke, Blackheath, Greenwich, Eltham, Charlton, Woolwich, Lewisham and surrounding parts of South East London. The aim is to provide a clear assessment, practical advice and an individual rehabilitation plan without the added difficulty of travelling to a clinic.
What is home visit physiotherapy?
Physiotherapy can be used for a wide range of problems affecting pain, movement, strength, balance and mobility. The NHS describes physiotherapy as a treatment that can help ease pain and improve movement after injury, illness, disability or surgery. A first physiotherapy appointment usually includes discussion of symptoms and medical history alongside assessment of areas such as movement, strength and balance.
In a home visit, that same clinical process takes place in your own environment. This can be particularly useful when the problem affects daily activities that are difficult to reproduce in a treatment room.
Who may benefit from mobile physiotherapy?
People recovering after hip, knee or other orthopaedic surgery
People with back, hip, knee, shoulder or other musculoskeletal pain
Older adults who feel weaker, less steady or less confident with walking
People living with conditions such as Parkinson’s disease, multiple sclerosis or the effects of stroke where movement or mobility is affected
People who have lost strength or mobility after illness or a hospital admission
People who simply find travelling to a clinic difficult or inconvenient
What happens during the first home physiotherapy assessment?
The initial appointment lasts 60 minutes. It starts with a discussion about your symptoms, relevant medical history, previous treatment and the activities you are currently finding difficult. Your goals matter: improving pain is important, but so may be getting back upstairs, walking to the shops, returning to the gym or feeling confident outdoors again.
The physical assessment is then selected around your individual problem. Depending on your needs, this may include joint movement, muscle strength, balance, walking, transfers, stairs, functional tasks or use of a walking aid. The findings are explained clearly rather than simply handing you an exercise sheet without context.
Why can a home assessment be useful?
A home visit allows rehabilitation to focus on the exact environment in which difficulties occur. If you struggle with stairs, your own staircase can be assessed. If a low sofa or chair is difficult, the movement can be practised using the furniture you actually use. If balance is the concern, walking routes, turning spaces and mobility-aid use can be reviewed in context.
For post-operative patients, home visits can also remove a practical barrier during the early stages of recovery. You can begin working on walking, strength and function without first organising transport to a clinic.
What might treatment include?
Treatment is based on the assessment rather than a one-size-fits-all programme. It may include progressive strengthening, mobility exercises, balance practice, walking or stair practice, pacing and activity advice, rehabilitation after surgery, and education about how to progress safely between appointments.
A useful rehabilitation plan should progress. If an exercise becomes easy and remains appropriate, it usually needs to become more challenging in some way rather than being repeated indefinitely. Progression might involve more resistance, a larger movement, less support, more repetitions or a more functional task depending on the goal.
Home physiotherapy for strength, balance and falls concerns
Strength and balance are particularly important for older adults. Current NHS guidance advises adults aged 65 and over to include activities that improve strength, balance and flexibility on at least two days each week. NICE guidance on falls prevention also recommends exercise programmes that are progressive, tailored to the person and focused on areas such as balance, coordination, strength and power when appropriate.
If you have had repeated falls, a fall with significant injury, loss of consciousness, sudden new neurological symptoms or a rapid deterioration in balance, a broader medical assessment may be needed rather than relying on exercise alone.
Home physiotherapy after hip or knee surgery
After joint replacement or other orthopaedic surgery, rehabilitation often needs to move from early exercises towards meaningful strength and function. A home physiotherapy assessment can look at walking-aid use, stairs, transfers, range of movement, lower-limb strength and confidence with everyday activity. Your surgeon’s specific precautions and instructions always take priority where they differ from general rehabilitation advice.
Do I need equipment at home?
You do not need a home gym. Many programmes can start with body weight, a chair, a step, household space or simple resistance equipment. If additional equipment would meaningfully help your progression, this can be discussed after the assessment rather than buying equipment first and hoping it is appropriate.
