If you’ve just had a hip replacement (or you’re supporting someone who has), the first couple of weeks can feel like a blur: pain meds, sleep positions, walking aids, and a million ‘am I doing this right?’ questions. Here’s a simple, home-friendly way to think about the first 2 weeks.
What matters most early on
Keep swelling down (it affects pain and movement)
Walk little and often (not one huge push)
Do the basics consistently (the boring stuff works)
Know what’s normal vs what needs a check
A realistic daily rhythm
Short walk every 1–2 hours while awake (even 2–5 minutes)
Gentle exercises 1–2 times/day (quality over quantity)
Elevate + ice after activity
Plan rest — recovery is training too
Common ‘is this normal?’ questions
Swelling and bruising down the leg
Feeling stiff first thing in the morning
Tiring quickly after small tasks
A bit of a limp while strength returns
If you want a step-by-step plan (with progress milestones, exercise guidance, and the stuff people forget to tell you), I put it all into my Hip Replacement Recovery eGuide.
