How to Get Up From the Floor Safely as You Get Older

Getting up from the floor is a useful everyday skill that can become harder with reduced leg strength, pain, poor balance or fear after a fall.

Practise before you need it

If safe to practise, learn the movement near a stable support. A common strategy is to roll onto your side, move onto hands and knees, bring one foot forwards and use a sturdy chair to rise.

Strength that supports floor transfers

Sit-to-stands, step-ups, hip and leg strengthening and controlled kneeling transitions can all contribute.

After a fall

Do not rush to stand if you may be injured, feel unwell or hit your head. Seek help if you cannot get up safely.

A structured next step

The Strength & Balance Exercise Guide brings progressive strength, balance, mobility and falls-prevention exercise together in one structured resource. It is a £24.99 one-off digital purchase with immediate access.
