How to Improve Single-Leg Balance as You Get Older

Single-leg balance is useful for walking, stepping over obstacles, dressing and negotiating stairs.

Start with support

Stand beside a stable surface and reduce hand support only as control improves. A brief controlled hold is better than repeated near-falls.

Strength matters too

Hip, calf and leg strength contribute to single-leg control, so step-ups, heel raises and sit-to-stands can complement balance practice.

Progress safely

Change foot position, support, duration or add controlled reaching, but do not make several variables harder at once.

A structured next step

The Strength & Balance Exercise Guide brings progressive strength, balance, mobility and falls-prevention exercise together in one structured resource. It is a £24.99 one-off digital purchase with immediate access.
