Is generalised joint hypermobility the same as Hypermobility Spectrum Disorder?

No. Joint hypermobility can be present without causing significant symptoms. Hypermobility Spectrum Disorder is used when hypermobility is associated with clinically significant symptoms and other diagnoses do not better explain the presentation.

Is Hypermobile Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome diagnosed with a genetic test?

At present, Hypermobile Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome is diagnosed clinically rather than through a single confirmatory genetic test. Assessment should be completed by an appropriately qualified clinician using the relevant diagnostic criteria and differential diagnosis.

Should people with hypermobility avoid exercise?

Usually not. Exercise can be an important part of management, but the type, dose and progression may need adapting to symptoms, instability, fatigue, autonomic symptoms and current capacity.
