Physiotherapy for Back Pain at Home (South East London)

Updated: Sep 2

Back pain can make everyday movement uncomfortable, and travelling to a clinic is not always convenient when sitting, walking or getting in and out of a car is difficult. A home physiotherapy assessment brings the assessment to you and allows rehabilitation to be planned around the movements you actually need to manage at home.

What happens during a home back pain assessment?

The first step is understanding the problem rather than jumping straight to exercises. A physiotherapist will ask about how the pain started, what makes it better or worse, whether symptoms travel into the leg, what activities are limited, relevant medical history and what you want to get back to doing.

The physical assessment may include spinal and hip movement, strength, walking, functional tasks and other tests chosen according to your symptoms. Imaging is not automatically required before physiotherapy. NICE recommends imaging for low back pain in specialist care only when the result is likely to change management.

Why assess back pain at home?

A home visit can make the assessment more relevant to daily life. If getting out of your usual chair, climbing your stairs, standing at the kitchen worktop or walking from your front door is difficult, those tasks can be reviewed in the environment where the problem actually occurs. This can help make the rehabilitation plan more practical.

Should you rest or keep moving?

For many episodes of common low back pain, prolonged inactivity is not the goal. NICE recommends tailored self-management advice that encourages people to continue normal activities, and says exercise programmes can be considered according to the person's needs, preferences and capabilities. The correct starting point depends on your symptoms and current ability.

What might rehabilitation include?

  • Gradually rebuilding walking and general activity

  • Strengthening the trunk, hips and legs where appropriate

  • Improving tolerance for bending, lifting, sitting or standing

  • Pacing and graded progression if activity has reduced

  • A home exercise programme that can be progressed over time

When should back pain be medically assessed urgently?

Routine physiotherapy is not the right route for every presentation. Seek urgent medical advice for new bladder or bowel control problems, numbness around the genitals or saddle area, rapidly worsening weakness, severe symptoms after significant trauma, or other acute symptoms that concern you. If you are unsure whether your symptoms are appropriate for routine physiotherapy, seek medical advice first.
