What Happens During a Mobile Physiotherapy Appointment? A Step-by-Step Guide

A mobile physiotherapy appointment brings assessment and rehabilitation to your home, removing the need to travel to a clinic when pain, reduced mobility, recent surgery or practical circumstances make that difficult.
What happens before the appointment?
When you book, you will provide the basic information needed for the appointment. It can be helpful to have any relevant hospital letters, scan reports, medication information and the walking aid you normally use available when the physiotherapist visits.
1. Discussing your symptoms and goals
The assessment begins with a detailed discussion about your symptoms, medical history, previous injuries or surgery, current activity and the things you want to improve. This helps make the assessment specific to you rather than following a fixed routine.
2. Physical assessment
The physical assessment depends on the problem. It may include joint movement, muscle strength, walking, balance, sit-to-stand, stairs and functional movements. A knee, shoulder, back or post-operative assessment will each look different.
3. Assessing you in your own environment
One advantage of a home visit is that the physiotherapist can see the activities that actually cause difficulty. This may include your stairs, normal chair, walking around the home, getting in and out of bed or using your usual walking aid.
4. Your rehabilitation plan
Following the assessment, you should have a clearer understanding of what may be contributing to the problem and what to work on. Treatment can include exercise rehabilitation, strength work, mobility, balance, walking practice, activity progression and advice, with hands-on treatment where appropriate.
5. Exercises between appointments
Many exercises can be completed with minimal equipment using a chair, wall, stairs, resistance bands, light weights or bodyweight. The programme should be realistic enough to continue independently and should progress as your ability improves.
Who can benefit from a mobile physiotherapy appointment?
Home physiotherapy may be useful for adults with musculoskeletal pain, reduced mobility, balance difficulties, arthritis or post-operative rehabilitation needs. You do not need to be housebound; some people choose a home visit simply because it is more convenient.
