How to Know If You Need a Physio (or Just Time): A Simple Checklist
Updated: Sep 2
Not every new ache or stiffness needs a physiotherapy appointment. Some minor musculoskeletal problems settle with time, sensible activity and simple self-management. But waiting indefinitely can also be unhelpful when pain, weakness, balance problems or reduced mobility are stopping you doing normal activities.
You may be able to self-manage initially if
Symptoms are mild and clearly improving
You can still manage normal daily activities reasonably well
There was no significant injury or sudden loss of function
There are no concerning neurological or systemic symptoms
In that situation, keeping gently active, avoiding unnecessary prolonged rest and gradually returning to normal movement may be reasonable. If symptoms are worsening or not moving in the right direction, reassessment becomes more worthwhile.
A physiotherapy assessment may be useful if
Pain is repeatedly limiting walking, stairs, work, sleep or exercise
You are unsure which exercises are appropriate or how to progress them
Strength or mobility has reduced after surgery, illness or a hospital admission
You have become less confident with balance or walking
A problem keeps returning when you increase activity
You want a structured rehabilitation plan after an operation or injury
What does a physiotherapy assessment actually add?
A useful assessment should do more than hand you a generic exercise sheet. It should clarify what is limiting you, assess the movements and physical factors relevant to the problem, explain the findings in plain language and give you a plan that can be progressed. Depending on the problem, this may include strength, range of movement, balance, walking, transfers, stairs or other functional tasks.
When is a home physio visit particularly useful?
A home assessment can be especially useful when travel is difficult, you are recovering from surgery, you are worried about falls or mobility, or the problem is closely linked to your home environment. Stairs can be assessed on your own staircase, transfers can be practised from the chair or bed you actually use, and walking aids can be reviewed in the space where you normally move.
When should you seek medical rather than routine physiotherapy review?
Seek urgent medical assessment for symptoms such as sudden new weakness, facial droop or speech difficulty, loss of bladder or bowel control with numbness around the saddle area, severe symptoms after significant trauma, chest pain, sudden breathlessness, or another acute change that makes you concerned. Recent surgery with signs of infection, marked calf swelling or a sudden deterioration also needs prompt medical advice rather than waiting for a routine appointment.
