Exercise After 65: How to Start If You Haven’t Exercised for Years

If you are over 65 and have not exercised for years, you do not need to start with a complicated gym programme. The best starting point is a manageable routine you can perform safely and repeat consistently.

Start with everyday movements

Sit-to-stands, short walks, calf raises and gentle supported squats are practical starting exercises because they relate directly to everyday mobility.

Build slowly

Trying to make up for years without exercise in one week is more likely to leave you sore and discouraged. Increase one part of the programme at a time.

Include strength, not only walking

Walking is excellent for general activity, but specific strength work helps train the muscles needed for chairs, stairs and carrying.

Add simple balance practice

If appropriate, practise supported balance near a stable surface using feet-together standing, weight shifting and controlled stepping.

Make it harder when it becomes easy

Progress can come from more resistance, a harder movement variation or less hand support. Your body needs increasing challenge to continue adapting.

When should you get advice first?

Professional assessment is sensible if you have repeated falls, severe balance problems, significant unexplained pain, recent major surgery, rapid loss of strength or symptoms that make you unsure whether exercise is safe.
