How Do You Return to Exercise After an hEDS Flare?

A symptom flare can make it tempting either to stop everything indefinitely or to jump straight back to your previous programme as soon as you feel slightly better.

Keep what you can tolerate

During a flare, you may be able to reduce resistance, range, repetitions or exercise duration rather than abandoning all movement.

Rebuild towards your previous baseline

As symptoms settle, restore the programme progressively. You do not necessarily need to restart from zero, but your first session back should not be a test of your maximum.

Learn from repeated patterns

If the same training dose repeatedly triggers a major flare, adjust the programme rather than treating each episode as unpredictable bad luck.

A structured next step

The 227-page HSD & hEDS Physiotherapy Exercise Guide brings together joint control, strength, proprioception, pacing and 39 adaptable exercises across four pathways. It is a £24.99 one-off digital purchase with immediate access.
