Strength Exercises for Over 80s: Where Should You Start?

Strength training can be adapted well into later life, from seated and supported exercise to bands, weights and functional strengthening.

Focus on everyday movements

Chair rises, step practice, calf raises and hip strengthening relate directly to walking, stairs and transfers.

Progress rather than staying permanently easy

As an exercise becomes comfortable, add resistance, repetitions or a harder variation. Age does not mean exercise must remain extremely gentle.

Check individual restrictions

Recent surgery, unstable medical conditions, unexplained symptoms or repeated falls may require assessment before progressing independently.

A structured next step

The Strength & Balance Exercise Guide brings progressive strength, balance, mobility and falls-prevention exercise together in one structured resource. It is a £24.99 one-off digital purchase with immediate access.

This article provides general physiotherapy education and does not replace individual medical or physiotherapy assessment.
