Strength Training for Over 70s: A Beginner’s Guide

Strength training after 70 can start very simply. You do not need to lift heavy weights on day one; you need exercises that challenge your muscles appropriately and can be progressed as you become stronger.

Begin with functional exercises

Sit-to-stands, supported squats, calf raises and low step-ups are useful because they train movements needed in everyday life.

Use support when needed

A chair, worktop or handrail can make an exercise safer while still allowing the muscles to work. Reduce support as control improves.

Progressive resistance matters

Once bodyweight exercises become easy, resistance bands, dumbbells or other weights can make them more challenging. Progress gradually and keep technique controlled.

Allow recovery

Harder strength sessions need recovery. You can remain active between sessions with walking, mobility and lighter exercise.

Train the whole lower limb

A balanced programme can include the thighs, hips and calves rather than focusing on only one muscle group.

When should you get individual advice?

Recent major surgery, repeated falls, severe balance problems, significant unexplained pain or rapid weakness are reasons to seek appropriate assessment before progressing an unsupervised strength programme.
