Strength Training With Hypermobility: Building Stability Without Chasing End Range

Strength training can be useful for hypermobility when it prioritises control, repeatable loading and sensible progression rather than extreme range.

Why strength matters

Muscles are one of the active systems that help control a joint. Improving strength and endurance can make everyday tasks such as walking, carrying, stairs and getting out of a chair more reliable, even though it does not change the underlying connective tissue.

Control is more important than extreme range

A useful strength exercise is one you can perform smoothly through a controllable range. You do not need to use the maximum range available at every joint. If the final part of the movement becomes unstable, reducing range can make the exercise more productive.

How to progress

Progression can involve more repetitions, additional resistance, a longer hold, slower tempo or a more demanding position. Change one variable at a time so that you can judge the response during the session and afterwards.

Gym exercise can be appropriate

Higher-load and gym-based conditioning can be suitable for some people with Hypermobility Spectrum Disorder or Hypermobile Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome. The key questions are whether technique remains controlled, recovery is predictable and the load matches the person’s current capacity.
