What Should an hEDS or HSD Physiotherapy Assessment Include?

A useful physiotherapy assessment should look beyond a Beighton score and understand the actual problems affecting your daily life.

Your history and goals matter

The assessment may explore pain, instability, subluxations, injuries, fatigue, dizziness, current activity, work and the tasks you want to improve.

Physical assessment should be relevant

Depending on your presentation, this can include strength, movement control, balance, walking, functional tasks and joint-specific testing. Not every joint needs to be pushed to maximum range.

The outcome should be a plan

You should understand the priorities, starting exercise dose, how to monitor symptoms and how the programme can progress. Medical concerns outside physiotherapy should be appropriately signposted.

A structured next step

The 227-page HSD & hEDS Physiotherapy Exercise Guide brings together joint control, strength, proprioception, pacing and 39 adaptable exercises across four pathways. It is a £24.99 one-off digital purchase with immediate access.

This article provides general physiotherapy education and does not replace individual medical or physiotherapy assessment.
